When you visit your parent or loved one in care, you check their mood, their room, and their general health. But do you check their hair?
Hair condition is often a quiet indicator of overall wellbeing. Here is a quick 3-point checklist for your next visit:
- Check the Nape: Gently lift the hair at the back of the neck. This is the #1 spot for matting (knots) caused by friction against pillows and high collars. If it’s tangled, they may be in discomfort.
- Check the Scalp: Is it dry or flaky? Keep an eye out for redness. A dry scalp can be very itchy and frustrating for someone who may not be able to scratch or articulate the problem.
- Check the Length: Is the fringe getting in their eyes? Does the length make them look unkempt?
The Solution: If you notice these issues, it might be time for a professional intervention. Regular trims prevent matting and improve hygiene.
